Red raspberry, medicinal cherry, tobacco and menthol with a blood orange lift, this is Barolo in a nobly rustic register. On the palate it's large-scaled and concentrated, the sappy fruit cut through with firm, grippy tannins that feel sweeter and less combative than the 1996 vintage, according to Cristina Brovia. Not a wine built for early finesse, but the sheer depth of fruit carries the structure convincingly, and the spine running through the finish is outstanding. Built to evolve over two to three decades.
