Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2008

Dark, brooding ruby, barely letting light through. Cassis, cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco and incense rise from the glass with excellent definition, a smoky mineral thread emerging as it breathes. Concentrated and generous on entry, dark berries, bitter cherry, rose pastille, with mocha, cola and Indian spice folded through in a way that feels genuinely earned rather than merely opulent. A current of freshness runs beneath all that fruit, keeping things lifted and alive. The finish is long, circling back to dried flowers and warm spice, with tannins that are present but fully absorbed into the whole. Yields were cut by more than half in this challenging vintage, and the discipline shows: this is strict vineyard and cellar selection making a compelling case for itself. Worth noting, the 2002 Valbuena, from a vintage most had written off, is drinking beautifully now, the fruit still showing some youthful vigor while the tannins soften, suggesting it has only just entered its window.
