Vega Sicilia Unico 2006

Dense, near-opaque ruby, barely translucent at the core. The nose is heady and complex: dark cherry preserve, dried violet, incense, pipe tobacco, with a seductive curl of coconut and candied licorice. Vast concentration on the tongue, yet the wine stays alive, carried by juicy, lifted acidity through flavors of cherry compote, fruitcake and floral pastille. Tannins are fine and dusty, woven seamlessly into the fruit rather than asserting themselves. The finish is broad, sappy and long-running, with genuine momentum behind it. Needs time, this is built for the distance.
