Dark, near-opaque ruby in the glass. The nose is brooding and layered, mulberry, dried rose, dark cherry, and a dusting of spice cake, with a mineral thread running underneath. On the palate, the fruit is generous and ripe: blackberry and sweet raspberry lifted by fresh acidity, with a bitter chocolate note that opens up as the wine breathes. Tannins are fine and dusty, adding grip without any rasp. Fermented in large American oak vats before aging in new French oak, yet the wood is fully absorbed, structure and fruit do the talking. The finish is long, smoky, and fades slowly through sweet red fruit and floral pastille. Drinking well now, and built to hold comfortably for several more years.
