Vega Sicilia Unico 1999

Still deeply colored for a 1999, dark ruby with barely a hint of age at the rim. Cherry preserve, blood orange, black raspberry and a thread of Asian spice rise from the glass, grounded by iron-edged minerals and a brooding smokiness. Concentrated and vivid on the tongue, the fruit shows no fatigue, driven forward by a firm mineral backbone and that signature Unico exoticism that trails deep into the finish. The power is undeniable, yet the wine stays composed, taut rather than heavy, with everything held in careful tension. Accessible now, though the structure and layered depth point clearly toward a long road ahead. Drink 2015–2040.
