La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890 1995

Deep garnet with an amber rim that tells you exactly where you are. The nose opens on red fruit preserves, dried rose, pipe tobacco and a slow curl of vanilla and wood smoke, unhurried and thoroughly seductive. In the mouth it's sappy and plush, with cherry, sweet berry and rose pastille riding a quiet mocha undercurrent. Tannins are long since resolved; the texture is seamless. The finish holds with exceptional persistence, trailing off on floral and spice notes without a single rough edge. Classic 890, and a compelling case for patience.
