History
The Rossi family planted the ranch in 1910, and Val Rossi farmed it into his eighties. After his death in 1999 the vineyard fell into disrepair and the old Alicante Bouschet and Grand Noir blocks were lost. Sandra Otellini, widow of the former Intel chief executive Paul Otellini, is the current owner and steward. Phil Coturri's Enterprise Vineyards farms it organically; Coturri stepped down as chief executive of that company in October 2025 after sixty harvests, his last photographed here. The winemaker Tony Biagi's description of the site as the To Kalon of Grenache has followed it into general use.
The Site
Forty-two acres in Kenwood on Lawndale Road, near the back entrance of Trione-Annadel State Park, in the Sonoma Valley AVA. The vineyard is certified organic.
Vines and Blocks
The historic 1910 planting was a Zinfandel-led field blend; what survives and what has been replanted is now mostly Rhone: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache Blanc. The Grenache is the reason for the queue of buyers.
The Wines
Carlisle bottles a Rossi Ranch designate, and so do Winery Sixteen 600, Sosie, Loxton, Dane, Mayo Family, Jeff Cohn and Gallica. Note that a separate and unrelated Williams Rossi Ranch exists in Rutherford, farmed by Frog's Leap; the two are regularly confused.
