Sonoma Coast

Peters Vineyard

An unshowy 1980s planting farmed by two generations of one family, bottled by Anthill Farms.

History

Randy Peters farms the vineyard with his father-in-law Tom Mukaida, west of Sebastopol. The Pinot Noir dates from the 1980s, which makes it old for a site of this kind, and Anthill Farms has been its principal customer. A separate cluster of vineyards called Peters in Napa is unrelated and has caused confusion in mapping data before.

The Site

Cool, wind-exposed ground west of Sebastopol. The wines are labelled Sonoma Coast, not Russian River Valley, despite the site's position near that boundary.

Vines and Blocks

Pinot Noir in the Pommard and 777 selections from the original 1980s planting. A more recent block of under an acre carries Syrah and Viognier.

The Wines

Anthill Farms' Peters Vineyard Pinot Noir is the designate to know, in the house's restrained, whole-cluster-inflected style.
