History
Ted Klopp and his daughter Lauren Klopp Williams planted H. Klopp in 2014 and grow the fruit. It is the newest of three distinct Klopp-family sites, after Klopp Ranch, established in 1989, and Thorn Ridge, planted in the mid-1990s, and the three are regularly conflated. Cobb Wines, LaRue, Relic and Ernest Vineyards all bottle a designate from it.
The Site
South of Sebastopol at 250 feet on fine Goldridge sandy loam, roughly eleven miles inland from open ocean, in the corridor between the Bodega Bay Gap and the Petaluma Gap that gives this pocket its wind.
Vines and Blocks
Chardonnay in heritage selections rather than Dijon clones: Old Wente, Mount Eden and Robert Young are the ones the producers name, planted in roughly equal blocks.
The Wines
LaRue, Cobb, Relic and Ernest each make an H. Klopp Chardonnay, which makes this young site an unusually direct comparison across four cellars.
