Russian River Valley

Keefer Ranch

Fifty acres in a cold Green Valley bowl, planted in 1988, and the site Kosta Browne thought worth buying into after twenty-five years as a customer.

Premier

History

Robert and Marcy Keefer bought the property as a former apple orchard in 1985 and planted it in 1988. Marcy Keefer and her son Craig Strehlow farm it, and launched their own Keefer Ranch label in 2006. On 2 July 2013 Kosta Browne bought a twenty-acre section of the fifty-acre vineyard outright, the K2 block; it was that winery's first vineyard purchase, and gave it roughly forty per cent of its own estate fruit at the time. The Keefers retained the remaining thirty acres.

The Site

A south-facing bowl on Goldridge sandy loam in a cold fog pocket, geographically inside the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA, though producers label the wines with the broader Russian River Valley.

Vines and Blocks

Pinot Noir across most of the site with Chardonnay alongside it, planted in 1988. The K2 block is the twenty acres Kosta Browne now owns.

The Wines

The buyer list reads like a directory of Russian River Pinot Noir: Kosta Browne, Freeman, Failla, Siduri, Loring, Pali, MacRostie, Senses, Domaine Della and A.P. Vin among them, alongside the family's own Keefer Ranch label.
