Los Olivos District

Sanger Estate Vineyard

A healthcare executive's 25 acre planting at the eastern edge of the Los Olivos District, feeding the family's three wine labels alongside America's only all-Lucca olive grove.

History

Bill Sanger, the former Envision Healthcare chief, and his wife Jan bought the Santa Ynez property around 2011 when it held nothing but olives, then planted the vineyard and assembled the Sanger Family of Wines: Consilience, the label Brett Escalera founded with a 1997 Syrah, joined in 2013, alongside Tre Anelli and Marianello.

The Site

Twenty five acres among the easternmost vineyards of the Los Olivos District, on the warm inland end of the Santa Ynez Valley, sharing the 40 acre estate with ten acres of 1,700 Lucca olive trees. The separate Estelle Vineyard adjoins it to the northeast, a different property despite the shared road.

Vines and Blocks

Thirteen varieties: a Rhone core expanded to Burgundian and Bordeaux plantings plus Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.

The Wines

The estate fruit feeds the family's own labels from the Solvang tasting room, warm-climate Rhone reds and an unusually wide varietal spread for a single Los Olivos site.
