History
Abreu bought the 33 acre tract near Angwin around 2000, his first property purchase, after years of knowing the Las Posadas forest beside it. Development was slow and selective; the wine appeared first as Abreu Howell Mountain from the 2007 vintage and carried the Las Posadas name by 2011. Rocks cleared from the ground became the property's walls, and century-old first-growth redwood stakes from earlier farming still stand on the land.
The Site
About 15 planted acres at roughly 2,000 feet, above the fog line, on red Aiken soils layered over white volcanic tufa, bordered by forest with a section against the Angwin airstrip, near the historic Bancroft Vineyard.
Vines and Blocks
Cabernet Sauvignon leads with an unusually deep share of Cabernet Franc, plus Petit Verdot and a little Malbec in recent blends.
The Wines
Las Posadas is the most structured wine of the Abreu quartet, mountain tannin and dark mineral drive built for decades, alongside Madrona Ranch, Cappella and Thorevilos.
