History
Kevin Harvey planted the site with neighbouring families, the Slettens, Martins and Sullivans, on a former Christmas tree farm about four hundred yards from Rhys's Home Vineyard.
The Site
Roughly twenty acres in Portola Valley, San Mateo County, near a strand of the San Andreas Fault, with just over six acres of Pinot Noir on a north-east-facing slope at about 400 feet. Soils are alluvial sand and clay. The property sits outside the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA boundary, so the wine is labelled San Mateo County, a distinction that holds across many vintages and is the reason this page does not sit with the rest of the Rhys estates.
Vines and Blocks
Just over six acres of Pinot Noir on a gentle north-east slope, quite different ground from the steep decomposed-sandstone ridges the label is known for.
The Wines
Fermented with around forty per cent whole clusters and about a third new French oak, the wine is plusher and readier than the mountain-ridge bottlings, and is released in small volumes largely to the mailing list.
