A large boundary around a vanished vineyard
Our einzellagen layer delimits 122.05 hectares under this name, a single block reaching west and north of the village and up into the Elz valley. The planted reality is a fraction of one percent of that. The Rheinland-Pfalz register recorded under one hectare in 2022, and the 2024 return does not list the Kirchberg at all. Published planted figures count vines while the delimitation counts ground, and here the two have almost nothing to do with each other. Moselkern's only site with a working area in the current register is the Rosenberg, at 3.6 hectares; a third name, Übereltzer, is likewise under a hectare.
The cultural-landscape register KuLaDig records what the site was: a formerly finely terraced steep slope with south-west exposure at the transition from the Mosel valley into the Elz valley, counted among the better ground locally. It was planted to Riesling alone and worked hard from the late nineteenth century into the middle of the twentieth. A transport cableway was installed on the slope in the 1960s, notably early for the Mosel, where the monorack rack railways that made steep-slope work viable only became general in the late 1980s. That investment did not save it. The rear-valley parcels were abandoned for poor access and insufficient sun, and KuLaDig notes that the terrace walls are still legible under the trees that have grown back over them.
What the name is not
Our data carries a Grosse Lage tag here, and it belongs to a different Kirchberg. The VDP.GROSSE LAGE of that name in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer is at Hatzenport, some eight kilometres downstream, a warm, calcareous-slate site of about 5.4 planted hectares that yields a Grosses Gewächs. No VDP member estate is recorded in Moselkern, and no parcel of the Moselkerner Kirchberg can be confirmed as classified. The Grosslage on the label would be Goldbäumchen, shared with Klotten, Pommern, Müden, Treis-Karden and half a dozen villages besides. Weingut Weckbecker, a Moselkern family working four hectares spread across twenty-five kilometres of the river since 1728, farms the Moselkerner Rosenberg and the Hatzenporter Kirchberg, and describes no wine from the Kirchberg at home.
