Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp

Overview

Pergentsknopp is a named parcel of the Scharzhofberg at Wiltingen on the Saar, occupying the upper part of the hill around its peak. It is not an independent Einzellage: on labels it appears as a parcel designation within the VDP.GROSSE LAGE Scharzhofberger, and the VDP itself lists "Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp, Wiltingen" among the classified holdings of Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt. The name reached international labels through Weingut Van Volxem, whose dry Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp Riesling Grosses Gewächs (also marketed as "P") has been bottled at least since the 2014 vintage and has been reviewed by Decanter as a Grosses Gewächs from 2018.

Terroir & Position

The parcel's history explains its separate identity. The historic Scharzhofberg did not include the upper hillside: the ground around the peak, Pergentsknopp among it, was planted only in the late nineteenth century and belonged before 1971 to the vineyard then registered as Scharzberg. With the 1971 wine law roughly ten hectares of this upper section were incorporated into the official Scharzhofberg delimitation, which is how Pergentsknopp came to sit inside the famous site while keeping its own cadastral name.

Its position is the highest ground of a hill that runs from about 190 to 310 meters, in the cool, wind-open transverse valley east of Wiltingen. The soils recorded for the parcel are the Scharzhofberg's deeply weathered Devonian slate together with wacke, its colors given variously as grey, blue, and red, with a very high rock share and fine crumbly earth; Van Volxem attributes the depth and precision of its dry Riesling from the parcel to these soils.

Producers

Weingut Van Volxem of Wiltingen farms the parcel it calls the historic Pergentsknopp plot and bottles the Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp Riesling GG, the estate's parcel selection above its regular Scharzhofberger GG. Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt holds a VDP-classified parcel under the same designation. No Pergentsknopp-designated bottling is documented from Egon Müller; the name on the market is Van Volxem's.

What to Know

Read Pergentsknopp on a label as a statement of place within the Scharzhofberg, not a separate vineyard: legally the wine is Scharzhofberger. Because the section was planted later and sits at the top of the hill, some references treat it as apart from the pre-1971 historic core; the distinction matters mainly to collectors comparing Van Volxem's two Scharzhofberg bottlings, of which the Pergentsknopp is the narrower, parcel-limited selection.
