Wiltingen's Gentle Upland Site

Rosenberg

Wiltingen is the centre of Riesling growing on the Saar, with roughly 160 hectares under vine and eleven Einzellagen, six of them carrying VDP classified parcels. The Rosenberg is one of the sites that never made that list, and its terrain explains why.

Position and shape

The register enters it as Lage 460273, Gemeinde and Gemarkung Wiltingen, with 30.9 hectares under vine. The einzellagen layer WineSaint ships delimits 66.48 hectares in three parts, measured geodesically; the planted figure counts vines and the delimited figure counts ground, so the smaller number is not a contradiction.

The site sits about 1.2 kilometres east of the village on the upland north of the Scharzhof valley, curling around the Wiltinger Klosterberg. Braunfels lies 1.3 kilometres to the south-southwest, Braune Kupp 1.45 kilometres to the northwest.

Orientation is excellent and gradient is not. Terrain sampled across the delimited ground shows essentially every point facing between south and west-southwest, with south and south-southwest dominating, across an elevation band of about 166 to 303 metres. The median gradient is 11 per cent and nothing exceeds about 25. Wiltingen's classified sites are steep slate walls that hold heat and force roots down; the Rosenberg is rolling ground with a good compass reading and none of the drama, high enough and far enough from the water to lose the river's thermal help.

The Grosslage is Scharzberg, the collective covering the whole Saar. The trap is acute in this village: a bottle labelled Wiltinger Scharzberg is a Grosslage blend that may contain nothing from Wiltingen's slopes and has no connection to the Scharzhofberg.

Classification and bottlings

No parcel of the Rosenberg appears in the VDP's vineyard register, which classifies Scharzhofberger, Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp, Gottesfuss, Braune Kupp, Braunfels, Hölle, Kupp and Volz in this village and stops there.

Single-site bottlings are occasional and often come from outside the parish. Günther Steinmetz, a Brauneberg estate on the Mittelmosel, has released a Wiltinger Rosenberg Alte Reben; the Worms merchant house Valckenberg sells a dry Rosenberg Riesling under its Adonis label. Very little has been written about the site itself, and any confident description of its flavour would be invention.
