The site is tiny. WineSaint's einzellagen layer delimits it at 2.63 hectares, a band barely 270 metres across, which makes it one of the smallest named sites on the lower Saar. Published planted figures run lower still, since delimitation measures ground rather than vines.
The slope
The Hölle sits on the neck of the Wiltinger Saarbogen, the old meander northwest of the village that is now a protected nature reserve. The VDP records the exposure as south to southeast, the elevation at about 140 metres above sea level, the gradient between 30 and 60 percent, and the soil as grey slate. Vereinigte Hospitien, which farms it, adds a loam component to that slate.
Geographically it belongs to a chain rather than standing alone. The Sandberg abuts it on the west, the Wiltinger Kupp on the northeast and above, and the Braune Kupp lies a few hundred metres beyond that. Its western corner comes within about a hundred metres of the eastern end of the Kanzemer Altenberg, which is why the estate describes the Hölle as sitting next to the Altenberg: this is the same slope carried around the bend and across the Gemarkung line into Wiltingen.
That position produces a specific microclimate. The site is low, close to the water, and tilted toward the sun, with reflection off the Saar adding to the account. Vinaet credits it with high must weights and a fuller-bodied result than the Saar typically delivers. Read that as the Saar's answer to a warm site rather than as Pfalz weight: the acid structure remains, but it arrives inside more flesh than the cooler Wiltingen slopes give.
Ownership and classification
Parcels within the Hölle totalling 1.89 hectares are classified VDP.GROSSE LAGE for Riesling. The only VDP member estate listed here is Stiftungsweingut Vereinigte Hospitien in Trier, which describes 1.5 hectares in sole ownership on the site.
The three figures are worth holding side by side: 2.63 hectares delimited, 1.89 classified, 1.5 actually farmed by the classifying estate. That gap is the whole point of the VDP system, which attaches classification to surveyed parcels and not to the einzellage boundary drawn by the wine law.
Vereinigte Hospitien is itself a product of the same upheaval that reshaped vineyard ownership across the Saar. The foundation estate was constituted in 1804 under Napoleon out of dissolved Trier monastic property, with charitable roots reaching back to a medieval hospital for pilgrims bound for Santiago. It works about 25 hectares, roughly 90 percent of it Riesling, and holds four sites outright, of which the Hölle is one.
The einzellage falls within the Grosslage Scharzberg, the umbrella name applied to the whole Saar. Nothing about the Grosslage designation distinguishes this slope from the flattest ground in the catchment.
