Register, Scale and Grosslage
The Rheinland-Pfalz Weinlagen register for the 2024 harvest lists the Geisberg under Lagennummer 410421, Gemeinde and Gemarkung Rivenich, with 3.4 hectares under vine. Our einzellagen layer measures 11.65 hectares of delimited ground, centred at 6.85828, 49.86589. The difference is the usual one between a boundary drawn on a map and vines actually standing inside it, and here the ratio is stark: roughly three-quarters of the delimited site is not planted.
The Grosslage is Michelsberg, which is the commercially decisive fact about this vineyard. Michelsberg is the catchment behind Piesporter Michelsberg, and it draws on Minheim, Neumagen-Dhron, Piesport, Trittenheim and Rivenich alike. The Piesport Treppchen alone contributes over 270 planted hectares across two cadastral districts and Trittenheim's Altärchen another 139. Fruit grown at Rivenich, several kilometres inland from Piesport and on a different river, may legally be sold under the Piesporter Michelsberg name. That designation, not the Geisberg, is where most of this ground's crop has historically gone.
Rivenich's other three registered sites are the Rosenberg at 33.8 hectares planted, the Niederberg at 13.8 and, notably, a Brauneberg at 1.8. Rivenich's Brauneberg has no connection whatever to the celebrated Brauneberg on the Mosel, which is a further reminder that a German vineyard name without its village is not an identification.
Classification and Producers
The Geisberg carried on the VDP roll is Ockfen's, on the Saar, the historic site recultivated by van Volxem. It is a different vineyard in a different valley and shares nothing with Rivenich but the word. vdp.de lists no classified site in Rivenich, and no VDP member estate can be confirmed farming here, so no VDP standing attaches to this ground.
Growers based in Rivenich include Weingut Leggewie-Jacoby and Weingut Wey. Essentially nothing is published under the Geisberg name specifically, and no reliable account of the site's aspect, gradient or soil profile is available in the accessible literature. Stating that plainly is more useful than filling the gap with regional generalities.
