Overview
Im Neuberg is a parcel designation within the Trittenheimer Apotheke, the large steep-slope Einzellage on the right bank of the Mosel opposite the village of Trittenheim. The VDP's vineyard register lists Apotheke Im Neuberg, Trittenheim as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE entry in its own right, alongside the Apotheke itself. The name reached the market through Weingut Josef Milz of Trittenheim, whose Riesling Apotheke Im Neuberg VDP.Grosses Gewächs from the 2022 vintage was the first release under the designation. A Trittenheimer Neuberg appears as a site name in its own right on wine lists of the 1920s; today the name survives as this parcel within the Apotheke.
Terroir & Position
The parent Apotheke is one of the Mittelmosel's landmark sites: an extremely steep slope with gradients of 40-60 percent, southwest exposition, and stony gray-blue Devonian slate that stores the day's warmth and releases it into the vines at night. The Wine Advocate, reviewing the first Milz release, located the Im Neuberg parcel on the left side of the large hillside lettering that spells out the vineyard's name above the river. Riesling dominates the site, and Apotheke wines are known for slate-driven structure and marked acidity.
Producers
Weingut Josef Milz has farmed in Trittenheim for over 500 years and is a longstanding VDP member; its holdings include the Apotheke, the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, and the Laurentiuslay, together with the Trittenheim monopole sites Leiterchen and Felsenkopf. The estate bottles the Apotheke at several levels, with Im Neuberg reserved for its Grosses Gewächs parcel selection. No other producer is documented bottling the Im Neuberg name.
What to Know
Im Neuberg belongs to the broader Mosel movement of reviving old cadastral parcel names (Gewanne) inside large Einzellagen, giving top holdings a narrower identity than the collective site name allows; comparable examples include Rotlay in the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Im Falkenberg in the Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr. A bottle labeled Apotheke Im Neuberg is therefore a single-parcel Apotheke wine, made in dry Grosses Gewächs style, and to date it is a Josef Milz label first released with the 2022 vintage.
