Cote De Nuits

Flagey Echezeaux

Flagey-Échezeaux is a commune of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, lying between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée. It occupies an unusual position in the appellation system: the village holds two grands crus, Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux, but no village or premier cru appellation under its own name. Wines from the commune's lesser vineyard land are sold as Vosne-Romanée, to which Flagey's vineyards have been administratively attached for appellation purposes since the system's creation.

Overview

The village itself sits east of the D974 road on the plain; its vineyards lie entirely on the slope side, adjoining the Clos de Vougeot.

History

The commune's name joins the ancient settlement of Flagey with its most famous vineyard, a practice common along the Côte, formalized here in the nineteenth century. The vineyards above the village were developed substantially by the Cistercians of Cîteaux, whose Clos de Vougeot borders Échezeaux directly. When the appellation framework was drawn in the 1930s, Flagey's slope was recognized with the two grands crus in 1937, while its remaining vineyard land was folded into Vosne-Romanée rather than given a separate village name.

Terroir & Climate

Échezeaux is the larger and more heterogeneous of the two crus, roughly 37 hectares assembled from eleven lieux-dits running uphill from the Clos de Vougeot wall toward the tree line, across meaningful variation in slope, soil depth and exposure. Grands Échezeaux, about nine hectares, lies immediately against the western wall of the Clos de Vougeot on deeper, more homogeneous marl and limestone, and is conventionally ranked the finer of the pair. The climate is that of the central Côte de Nuits: continental, east-facing, with the slope providing drainage and frost protection.

Grape Varieties & Wine Styles

Both grands crus are red wine appellations planted to Pinot Noir. Échezeaux, reflecting its size and internal diversity, spans a wide stylistic and qualitative range, from airy, red-fruited wines of the upper slopes to darker, fuller examples from the deeper soils; it is among the most affordable entries into grand cru Burgundy for that reason. Grands Échezeaux is more consistent: fuller, deeper and longer-lived, combining Vosne spice with a structure closer to Clos de Vougeot's. Both age on the decade scale, Grands Échezeaux typically longer.

Notable Producers

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest holder of Grands Échezeaux and a major presence in Échezeaux. The commune's wines are otherwise dispersed among many hands: Mugneret-Gibourg, Emmanuel Rouget, working the vines associated with Henri Jayer's legacy, Domaine Georges Noëllat, Perrot-Minot, Liger-Belair and numerous Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges domaines, along with the principal negociant houses.

What to Know

There is no village-level Flagey-Échezeaux wine: the name appears on labels only through its grands crus, and the commune's other production is labeled Vosne-Romanée. Within Échezeaux, the lieu-dit and the producer matter greatly given the cru's internal variation; Grands Échezeaux, despite the name, is not a superior bottling of Échezeaux but a separate, smaller and generally finer appellation.
