Wittmann

### History Wittmann is a family estate based in Westhofen, a village in the southern Rheinhessen that has become one of the most serious addresses for dry Riesling in Germany. The Wittmann family has farmed here for several generations, and the estate has been guided in its modern form by Philipp Wittmann, who took over winemaking responsibilities in the early 2000s and steadily lifted the property into the ranks of Germany's top producers. Under his watch, the estate converted to organic and later biodynamic farming, and its Grosse Gewächse gained recognition well beyond the regional wine press. The estate is a member of the VDP, the association of German quality producers whose classification system underpins the Grosses Gewächs designation.

### Vineyards The core holdings are concentrated around Westhofen, where the estate farms several of the VDP's classified Erste and Grosse Lagen sites: Kirchspiel, Morstein, Aulerde, and Brunnenhäuschen. Each has a distinct soil character. Morstein sits on heavy limestone and marl, giving wines with considerable structure and grip. Kirchspiel and Aulerde offer variations on limestone with more loess influence, tending toward slightly rounder textures. Brunnenhäuschen is a younger site in the estate's portfolio but increasingly well-regarded. Beyond Westhofen, the estate works the Gundersheimer Höllenbrand, a site further north in Rheinhessen with its own limestone-driven personality, and holds parcels in Nierstein, the historically significant but long-underperforming village now attracting renewed attention. The La Borne Alte Reben bottling draws on old-vine material. The estate has farmed organically and biodynamically for a number of years, and the certification is well-established rather than recent.

### Winemaking Wittmann's dry Rieslings ferment with native yeasts, typically in a combination of large old oak casks and stainless steel, depending on the cuvee. The Grosse Gewächse see extended lees aging before bottling, which contributes to the textural density and the wines' ability to develop over several years in the cellar. Fermentations are unhurried and can run well into winter. The estate does not chase early fruit clarity at the expense of complexity, and the wines often show a slightly austere, mineral-edged profile in youth that softens with time. The village-level Westhofener trocken and Niersteiner trocken bottlings function as accessible entry points that still reflect site character, while the Alte Reben cuvee sits between the village wines and the single-vineyard GGs in concentration and intent.
