Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault Liger-Belair works from a base in Gevrey-Chambertin, producing wines across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, with holdings ranging from village-level Bourgogne to Clos Vougeot and Corton-Charlemagne.

History

Thibault Liger-Belair comes from one of Burgundy's older négociant-grower families, a lineage with roots stretching back several generations and connections to some of the Côte d'Or's most historic vineyard parcels. The domaine as it operates today reflects Thibault's decision, in the early 2000s, to reclaim family vineyards that had been leased out for decades and to begin making wine under his own label. That shift, from passive landlord to active producer, is the defining event in the domaine's recent history. He established himself in Nuits-Saint-Georges before later relocating operations to Gevrey-Chambertin. A separate négociant structure, also under his name, allows him to work with purchased fruit or wine from appellations beyond his estate holdings, which accounts for some of the broader geographic spread visible in his range, including the Moulin-à-Vent from Beaujolais.

Vineyards

The domaine holds parcels across several appellations of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, with estate vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as the Grand Cru Clos Vougeot. The Corton-Charlemagne comes through the négociant side of the business. Liger-Belair farms organically, a practice he has maintained consistently, though the precise certification status of individual parcels is not always specified in public documentation. Vine age varies across the holdings; some parcels in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges include older vines that predate his stewardship. Soils across the range are the typical Côte d'Or mix of limestone and clay at varying depths, with the Clos Vougeot parcel sitting in the mid-slope zone where drainage is better than at the climat's lower reaches.

Winemaking

Liger-Belair works with native yeasts and uses a relatively high proportion of whole clusters in fermentation for the reds, a stylistic choice that contributes to the aromatic lift and mid-palate texture visible in wines like the Gevrey-Chambertin Croix des Champs and the Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas. Oak usage is present but restrained; new barrel percentages are kept moderate, with older wood doing much of the aging work. The wines are not heavily extracted and tend toward finesse over weight. For the whites, including the Corton-Charlemagne and the Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos de Village Blanc, barrel fermentation and aging in oak is standard, with the proportion of new wood calibrated to the appellation's weight. Filtration practices are minimal. The Moulin-à-Vent Champs de Coeur is vinified with the same seriousness applied to the Côte d'Or reds, and it stands as a clear statement about what that appellation can achieve when treated without compromise.
