Rochioli
Rochioli is one of the Russian River Valley's benchmark estates, producing single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from family-farmed sites in the Westside Road corridor that helped define the appellation's reputation.
History
The Rochioli family has farmed land along Westside Road in the Russian River Valley since the 1930s, when Joe Rochioli Sr. planted hops and other crops on what was then considered marginal agricultural ground. Winegrapes followed, and the family began selling fruit to other producers before eventually bonding their own winery. Tom Rochioli took over vineyard management and pushed the estate toward premium grape growing in the 1970s and 1980s, a period when the Russian River Valley was still finding its identity as a cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay appellation. The Rochioli name gained wide recognition partly through its fruit: J. Rochioli grapes appeared in wines that won early critical acclaim, which in turn built demand for the estate's own label. Today the winery remains family owned and operated, with the next generation involved in both farming and production. Allocations are tightly held and largely distributed through a mailing list, which has made Rochioli wines genuinely difficult to obtain despite the estate's relatively low profile outside serious California wine circles.
Vineyards
The estate sits along Westside Road in the western reach of the Russian River Valley, a corridor that benefits from pronounced marine influence pushed inland through the Petaluma Gap and the Russian River corridor. Mornings here are frequently foggy well into summer; afternoons cool sharply. The combination extends hang time considerably relative to warmer California appellations. Soils on the property are predominantly Goldridge sandy loam, the free-draining, low-fertility soil type closely associated with the finest Russian River Pinot Noir sites. The estate includes several named blocks that appear across the winery's single-vineyard lineup: River Block, Little Hill, Big Hill, Sweetwater, Three Corner, and Rachael's Vineyard, among others. Each block reflects subtle differences in elevation, exposure, vine age, and drainage. Farming practices lean toward sustainable and thoughtful viticulture, though the estate has not publicized formal organic or biodynamic certification.
Winemaking
Rochioli produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay almost exclusively, with the single-vineyard designates forming the core of what the winery is known for. The winemaking approach is rooted in the Burgundian model without rigidly imitating it: whole-cluster inclusion varies by vintage and block, native yeast fermentations are used for at least a portion of production, and the wines spend meaningful time in French oak with new oak percentages kept moderate enough that the fruit and site character remain legible. The Chardonnays, including the Rachael's Vineyard and Sweetwater designates, are barrel-fermented and aged on the lees, with the level of malo and stirring adjusted by vintage. The Pinot Noirs are typically unfined and lightly filtered if filtered at all. Across the lineup, the goal is wines that read as distinctly Russian River in their combination of red fruit, cool-climate acidity, and textural precision, rather than as exercises in extraction or new oak.
