Roches Neuves

History

Domaine des Roches Neuves was built into its current form by Thierry Germain, a Bordeaux-trained winemaker who arrived in the Loire Valley in the early 1990s and took over the estate in 1992. Germain came from Saint-Émilion and had no prior roots in the region, which may partly explain the restlessness and precision he brought to an appellation that had long underperformed its geological potential. Under his direction the domaine became one of the most closely watched addresses in Saumur-Champigny, cited alongside Clos Rougeard as evidence that the appellation could produce wines of genuine ambition and cellaring capacity. The estate takes its name from the lieu-dit on which it sits, and Germain has spent three decades extending and refining its holdings while sharpening the identity of each cuvée in the range.

Vineyards

The vineyards sit within the Saumur-Champigny appellation on the tuffeau plateau and slopes around Varrains and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. Tuffeau, the soft, porous limestone that defines the central Loire, is the dominant soil type across the holdings, giving wines a particular mineral tension and helping retain freshness through warm growing seasons. Germain converted the estate to biodynamic farming over a period of years and has held Demeter certification; the approach is well documented and not incidental to the wines. The Franc de Pied cuvée is sourced from ungrafted vines, a rarity in the appellation and a marker of the seriousness with which the domaine treats its oldest plant material. Les Mémoires draws on old-vine Cabernet Franc, and the Clos de l'Échelier is a walled parcel vinified separately to express a more defined, site-specific character.

Winemaking

Germain works with native yeasts and pursues minimal intervention in the cellar without making a fetish of it. Fermentation typically takes place in a mix of vessels depending on the cuvée; the top wines see some new oak, though the influence is restrained and the fruit and structure of the Cabernet Franc remain the primary focus. The Saumur Blanc, made from Chenin Blanc under the Clos Romans label, is vinified with the same attention as the reds and represents a serious expression of the variety in a region where white wine is often an afterthought. Across the range, extraction is measured rather than aggressive, producing wines that can be approachable young but reward five to ten or more years in bottle at the top level. The Franc de Pied, given its ungrafted source material, tends to show a particular fineness of texture that distinguishes it clearly from the other red cuvées.
