Occidental

Sonoma CoastUnited States

Occidental focuses entirely on the extreme western edge of Sonoma Coast, producing single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from fog-belt sites around Freestone, Bodega, and the Sonoma Coast's windward ridges. The wines are structured, cool-climate in character, and built for the cellar.

History

Occidental is the project of winemaker Dave Hirsch's former colleague and Sonoma Coast veteran Steve Kistler collaborator, but more precisely it belongs to consultant-turned-producer Ross Cobb, who spent years making wine for Hirsch Vineyards before launching Occidental in 2012. Cobb had spent enough time working the fog-driven sites of far western Sonoma to have a clear sense of which vineyards and which blocks were capable of producing wines with real structural tension. Occidental was built around that conviction. The label operates with a relatively small production focused exclusively on Pinot Noir from a defined cluster of vineyards in the Freestone-Occidental and Bodega areas, all within the true coastal zone rather than the broader Sonoma Coast appellation.

Vineyards

The vineyards Occidental works with sit in one of California's coldest and most fog-affected Pinot Noir corridors. Sites like Bodega Ridge, Running Fence, and the Bodega Headlands Vineyard occupy exposed coastal ridges and hillsides where morning fog routinely persists into midday and diurnal swings are pronounced. Soils are predominantly Goldridge sandy loam and related coastal series, free-draining and low in fertility, which keeps yields modest and concentration natural rather than forced. The SWK Vineyard and Freestone Occidental sites sit slightly further inland but remain squarely in the fog belt. Farming across the estate and sourced vineyards leans toward sustainable and low-intervention practices, though specific certifications vary by site.

Winemaking

Cobb's winemaking at Occidental is restrained by California standards. Fermentations rely on native yeast, whole-cluster inclusion is used selectively depending on vintage and site, and the wines see French oak with a measured new oak percentage that keeps wood influence secondary to fruit and structure. Aging runs roughly ten to sixteen months depending on the wine. The lineup is organized around a hierarchy that moves from the appellation-level Occidental Station bottling up through individual single-vineyard wines, with the Cuvee Catherine (Running Fence) and Cuvee Elizabeth (Bodega Headlands) representing the top of the range. These single-vineyard cuvees are typically the most tightly wound at release and reward several years of cellaring. Filtration is minimal. The overall style prioritizes acidity and savory complexity over fruit weight, which places Occidental's wines at the leaner, more Burgundian end of the California Pinot spectrum.
