Liquid Farm

Santa Rita HillsUnited States

Liquid Farm is a Santa Rita Hills specialist built around Burgundian-leaning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawing from some of the appellation's most distinguished sites, including Fiddlestix and Rita's Crown.

History

Liquid Farm was founded by Jeff and Nikki Noonan in the late 2000s, operating as a negociant-style producer without estate vineyards of their own. The name is a deliberate reference to their interpretation of the Santa Rita Hills: a cool, wind-scoured strip of the Santa Ynez Valley where the proximity to the Pacific keeps growing seasons long and temperatures disciplined. The project began with a clear stylistic brief, making Chardonnays that leaned toward acidity and restraint rather than the richer, more extracted style that had defined much of California's reputation for the variety. That positioning was somewhat countercultural at the time and helped establish Liquid Farm an early following among drinkers interested in leaner, more European-referenced California whites. The winemaking operation has been led at various points by different collaborators; the Noonans have remained the guiding force behind sourcing and style.

Vineyards

Liquid Farm sources from several named sites across the Santa Rita Hills AVA, a designation that runs roughly east to west and benefits from cold air funneled inland through the Sta. Rita Hills gap. Fiddlestix Vineyard, one of the appellation's benchmark Pinot Noir sites, sits at the western, cooler end of the corridor. Rita's Crown is a high-elevation vineyard with significant diurnal temperature swings and well-drained soils that tend to produce wines of strong definition. The Golden Slope and White Hill bottlings represent recurring single-vineyard or vineyard-designated Chardonnays that appear across multiple vintages in the catalog. La Hermana and the Four bottling round out the Chardonnay lineup, with Four likely a blend drawing from multiple sources. Soils throughout the appellation are predominantly sandy loams and diatomaceous earth, which drain well and stress vines usefully. Specific farming certifications for the source vineyards are not consistently documented in public records, though several Santa Rita Hills growers farm with reduced inputs.

Winemaking

The house style for Chardonnay favors whole-cluster pressing, native or low-intervention fermentation, and a relatively restrained oak program. The wines are not heavily wooded; the intent is to keep acidity prominent and fruit character precise rather than creamy or broad. Barrel aging is used selectively, with a preference for older or neutral wood that contributes texture without flavor. The Pinot Noirs follow a similar philosophy, aiming for transparency to site over extraction or concentration. Liquid Farm's Chardonnays, particularly White Hill and Golden Slope, have been the wines most consistently associated with the producer's identity: cool-climate in character, with citrus and stone fruit rather than tropical weight, and enough structure to develop meaningfully in bottle over several years.
