Le Clos du Caillou

Le Clos du Caillou is a respected Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate producing wines across multiple appellations, from approachable Côtes du Rhône to structured cuvées built on the galets and sandy soils of the southern Rhône.

History

Le Clos du Caillou is a family-owned domaine based in Courthézon, on the northeastern edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate has been in the hands of the Vacheron family for several generations, though the property itself has older roots as a working agricultural holding in this part of the Vaucluse. The modern identity of the domaine took shape progressively through the latter half of the twentieth century, as the family shifted focus toward quality wine production and began delineating their best parcels into named cuvées. Sylvie Vacheron, who has led the estate in recent decades, is widely credited with sharpening the domaine's direction, both in the vineyard and in positioning the wines commercially. Le Clos du Caillou is now regarded as one of the more reliable addresses in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, producing wines that sit outside the blockbuster extraction style that defined much of the appellation's reputation in the 1990s and 2000s.

Vineyards

The estate's holdings span two distinct soil types that define much of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's internal geography. The Quartz and Les Safres cuvées take their names directly from what lies underfoot: quartz-rich soils with the famous rounded galets roulés, and safres, the sandy, siliceous soils that produce lighter-framed, more aromatic wines than the clay-limestone and galet plateaux. The sandy safres parcels are notably well-drained and tend to yield wines with finer tannin structure and earlier aromatic expression. The galets retain daytime heat and radiate it back through cool nights, a thermal dynamic important given the mistral winds that regularly sweep the valley. The domaine also draws fruit from Côtes du Rhône vineyards outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape zone proper, used for the entry-level rosé and the Les Safres Côtes du Rhône tier. The estate farms organically, a certification it has held for a number of years, and the vineyards are managed without synthetic herbicides or pesticides.

Winemaking

The cellar approach at Le Clos du Caillou leans toward preserving the character of each soil type rather than imposing a uniform house style. Fermentations are conducted with native yeasts. The reds see varying proportions of whole-cluster vinification depending on the vintage and the cuvée, with Les Quartz typically receiving more whole-bunch fruit than the more accessible Les Safres. Aging vessels are a mix of large-format oak foudres and concrete or neutral containers; the domaine does not rely heavily on new barrique, which keeps the oak footprint low and the fruit profile intact. The Blanc Les Safres is a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape built primarily on Grenache Blanc and Clairette, vinified with attention to freshness and textural weight rather than oxidative richness. Filtration is minimal. La Réserve represents the domaine's most concentrated red expression, drawn from older vines and given extended aging before release.
