Kumeu River

KumeuNew Zealand

Kumeu River is New Zealand's benchmark Chardonnay house, farming multiple named single-vineyard sites in the Auckland-adjacent Kumeu region and making wines that regularly draw comparison with good Burgundy.

History

Kumeu River is a family-owned estate situated roughly 25 kilometres northwest of Auckland, in one of New Zealand's oldest wine-producing districts. The Brajkovich family, Croatian immigrants who settled in the region in the mid-twentieth century, built the winery from its early days as a modest table-wine producer into one of the country's most respected Chardonnay estates. The pivotal figure in that transformation was Michael Brajkovich, who became the first New Zealander to pass the Master of Wine examination, in 1989. That credential was not merely symbolic: it signalled a seriousness of intent and a technical fluency that reshaped how the wines were made and how they were positioned internationally. The estate remains family-run, with Michael's siblings involved in the business alongside him, giving the operation a continuity of ownership and direction that is relatively rare in a country where wine culture is still young.

Vineyards

Kumeu's climate is warm and humid by New Zealand standards, tempered by proximity to the Waitemata Harbour and the Tasman Sea. The soils are predominantly heavy clay, which drains poorly but retains moisture through dry summers and forces vines to root deeply. This is not an easy environment to farm, and yields are naturally moderate. The estate works several named vineyard blocks, each sold as a distinct single-vineyard Chardonnay: Maté's Vineyard, Hunting Hill, Coddington, and Rays Road, alongside the broader Estate and Village bottlings. The individual sites differ in aspect, elevation, and precise soil composition, which the wines reflect with some consistency across vintages. Specific farming certifications are not widely publicised, though the estate is known for careful canopy management suited to the humid conditions.

Winemaking

The Chardonnays are made in a broadly Burgundian idiom: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrique, and extended aging on lees with regular battonage. The oak regime leans toward used and older wood rather than new, keeping the influence of the barrel in the background. Malolactic fermentation is employed, contributing to the textural weight and integration for which the wines are known. The Village Chardonnay sits at the approachable end of the range, while the single-vineyard bottlings, particularly Maté's Vineyard and Coddington, are the wines most frequently cited in international comparisons with white Burgundy. Filtration practice varies by vintage. The estate also produces small quantities of Pinot Gris and Merlot-based reds, but Chardonnay is unambiguously the focus and the measure by which the producer is judged.
