Kistler
Kistler is one of California's benchmark Chardonnay producers, farming a network of distinct Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast sites and bottling them separately to map differences in soil, exposure, and microclimate.
History
Kistler Vineyards was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler in Sonoma County, at a time when California Chardonnay was largely defined by heavily oaked, butter-driven wines made from high-yielding valley-floor fruit. The two set out to make something more structured and site-specific, drawing early inspiration from Burgundy without simply imitating it. Steve Kistler took over winemaking duties entirely, and over the following decades the winery quietly became a reference point for the style: restrained for California, vineyard-delineated, built to age. Demand consistently outpaced supply, and for many years Kistler wines were available almost exclusively through a mailing list, giving them a scarcity that reinforced the reputation. The winery has remained privately held and deliberately small in its ambitions relative to the size of its following.
Vineyards
Kistler works with a collection of named single-vineyard sites spread across the Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast, including the estate Kistler Vineyard on the slopes of the Mayacamas range and sites such as Durell, Vine Hill, Trenton Roadhouse, Stone Flat, and Laguna Ridge. Each is bottled separately, reflecting meaningful differences in soil type, elevation, and aspect. The Russian River Valley sites sit in one of California's cooler appellations, pulled toward the Pacific by the Petaluma Wind Gap, with morning fog and afternoon wind slowing ripening and preserving acidity. Durell Vineyard in the Sonoma Valley is older and warmer, producing a fuller-framed style. Specific farming certifications are not widely documented, but the vineyards are managed with close attention to vine health and canopy, and yields are kept low.
Winemaking
Kistler ferments Chardonnay in barrel using native yeasts, with full malolactic fermentation and extended lees aging before bottling without fining or filtration. The oak regime leans on French barrels, with a portion of new oak that has decreased over time as the house style has moved toward greater tension and less obvious wood influence. The result is Chardonnay that reads as rich but not heavy, with texture built from lees contact rather than extraction or manipulation. Pinot Noir receives similar care: whole-cluster inclusion varies by vintage and site, and the wines age in French oak before bottling. The Laguna Ridge and Silver Belt Vineyard Pinots sit within the same general framework as the Chardonnays, prioritizing definition and length over concentration. Across both varieties, the house signature is a wine that shows well young but repays several years of cellaring.
