Giacomo Conterno

Barbera dItaly

Giacomo Conterno is among the most revered names in Barolo, built on a long family history in Serralunga d'Alba and an unwavering commitment to traditional, long-aged Nebbiolo from benchmark vineyard sites.

History

Giacomo Conterno has been one of the defining names in Barolo for the better part of a century. The estate was founded in the early twentieth century in Serralunga d'Alba, and its reputation was cemented under Giacomo himself and then his son Giovanni, who ran the winery for decades and became one of the most influential voices for traditional Barolo winemaking in Piedmont. Giovanni was famously uncompromising, resisting the modernist reforms that reshaped so many Langhe cellars during the 1980s and 1990s, and his wines became touchstones for those who believed Nebbiolo needed time, not technology, to reveal itself fully.

Giovanni passed away in 2004, and his son Roberto took over. Roberto has maintained the philosophical continuity his father established while also expanding the estate's vineyard holdings. The most significant move came in 2015 when Conterno acquired a portion of the Cerretta vineyard in Serralunga, adding to the already legendary Francia holding that had defined the estate for generations. The acquisition of fruit from the Arione vineyard in Serralunga further broadened the range. The estate remains family-owned and family-run, with no signs of outside investment or commercial compromise.

Vineyards

Conterno's vineyards are concentrated in Serralunga d'Alba, the commune that produces some of the most structured and longest-lived Barolo. Serralunga soils are dominated by compact Helvetian marlstone, a formation that yields wines of pronounced austerity and mineral tension compared to the more immediately yielding Tortonian soils of La Morra or Barolo village. Francia, the estate's flagship site, sits on a southeast-facing slope at moderate altitude and has been associated with Conterno for long enough that the two names are nearly inseparable in the minds of serious Barolo collectors. Cerretta is another Serralunga cru of high standing, with similar structural characteristics. Arione, also within Serralunga, rounds out the single-vineyard lineup. The estate also works with Barbera d'Alba from these same sites, producing vineyard-designated bottlings from both Francia and Cerretta. Specific farming certifications are not formally documented in public records, but the estate is understood to work the vineyards carefully and without industrial inputs.

Winemaking

Conterno is a standard-bearer for the traditional school of Barolo production. Fermentations are long, extended skin contact extracts substantial tannin and color, and the wines spend considerable time in large Slavonian oak casks rather than the small French barriques that became fashionable among modernist producers. The Barolo Francia, produced only in the best vintages, spends an exceptional period in cask before release and is one of the most age-worthy wines in all of Italy. The single-vineyard Barolos from Cerretta and Arione follow a similar approach, though release timelines may vary slightly by vintage. Native yeasts are used in keeping with traditional practice. The Barbera d'Alba bottlings from Francia and Cerretta are notable in their own right, showing the kind of depth and structure unusual for the variety and reflecting the same cellar philosophy applied to Nebbiolo. Filtration is minimal. These are wines made for patience.
