Emmanuel Rouget

Nephew and heir to Henri Jayer, Emmanuel Rouget makes some of the most sought-after Vosne-Romanée available, including Cros Parantoux, the premier cru Jayer made legendary.

History

Emmanuel Rouget is the nephew of Henri Jayer, the Vosne-Romanée vigneron whose name became synonymous with the finest expression of Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits. Rouget worked alongside his uncle for years, learning the craft from one of Burgundy's most influential figures before gradually taking over the domaine. When Jayer retired in the 1990s, Rouget assumed stewardship of the vineyards, including the plots that had made Jayer's reputation. Henri Jayer died in 2006, and Rouget has since operated the domaine in his own name while remaining the principal custodian of the Jayer legacy. The estate remains family-run and small in scale, producing wines in quantities that routinely fall short of demand.

Vineyards

The crown jewel of the domaine is Cros Parantoux, a premier cru in Vosne-Romanée that sits above the village on the slope above Richebourg. The site was largely abandoned before Henri Jayer replanted it in the 1950s; it is now among the most coveted single-vineyard addresses in all of Burgundy. Rouget also works with vines in Vosne-Romanée village and premier cru Les Beaumonts, as well as holdings further afield in Savigny-les-Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune, and regional Bourgogne Rouge. The Côte de Nuits sites sit on the classic Jurassic limestone and marl soils of the appellation, with Cros Parantoux notable for its higher elevation and stonier, more austere character relative to the vineyards directly below. Specific farming certifications are not publicly documented, though the domaine is understood to work with careful, attentive viticulture consistent with the Jayer philosophy.

Winemaking

Henri Jayer was a champion of destemming at a time when whole-cluster fermentation was standard in Burgundy, and Rouget has continued in that tradition. Wines are fermented without stems, with extended cold maceration before fermentation to extract color and fruit. Aging takes place in oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak that is meaningful but not excessive, following the approach Jayer refined over decades. The goal is wines of clarity and definition rather than extraction or weight. Cros Parantoux receives the most attention and the most new oak of anything in the cellar; it is one of the few premier crus in Burgundy that trades at prices well above most village-level grand crus elsewhere. The broader range, including the Savigny-les-Beaune and Chorey-les-Beaune, offers a more accessible entry point to the domaine's style, though allocations at every level are tightly held.
