Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive is the benchmark address for white Burgundy in Puligny-Montrachet, with grand cru and premier cru holdings across the village's most celebrated sites and a long record of producing wines of exceptional precision and age-worthiness.
History
Domaine Leflaive has been rooted in Puligny-Montrachet for over a century, with the Leflaive family establishing themselves as one of the Côte de Beaune's most significant domaine proprietors across successive generations. The estate grew substantially under Joseph Leflaive in the early twentieth century, who assembled the core of the grand cru and premier cru holdings that define the domaine today. His nephews Vincent and Jo Leflaive steered the property through the postwar decades, building its international reputation at a time when Burgundy was gaining serious attention outside France.
The most consequential shift in the domaine's modern history came under Anne-Claude Leflaive, who took over management in 1990 and held that role until her death in 2015. She converted the entire estate to biodynamic farming, a decision that was controversial at the time and is now seen as central to the domaine's identity. Her approach attracted attention well beyond Burgundy and made Leflaive a reference point for discussions about farming philosophy in fine wine. Since her death, the domaine has continued under family and management oversight, maintaining the farming and cellar practices she established.
The domaine also operates a négociant arm, Olivier Leflaive Frères, which is a separate business run by a different branch of the family and should not be confused with the domaine itself.
Vineyards
Leflaive's holdings are concentrated in Puligny-Montrachet and span the full hierarchy of the appellation, from village-level parcels through premier crus to four grand crus: Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a small parcel of Le Montrachet. The premier cru portfolio includes Les Pucelles, Les Combettes, Les Folatières, and Clavoillon, among others, giving the domaine unusual breadth across the commune's most important sites.
The soils across Puligny's premier and grand cru vineyards are predominantly limestone-rich with varying clay content, producing the mineral tension and textural weight that characterizes wines from this part of the Côte de Beaune. Elevations and exposures shift meaningfully between sites: Chevalier-Montrachet sits higher on the slope with thinner soils and better drainage, contributing to its reputation for finesse and length, while Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet sit lower with richer soils and a tendency toward more generous, structured wines.
The entire estate has been farmed biodynamically since the 1990s, certified under Demeter. Treatments follow the biodynamic calendar, with preparations applied to soils and vines throughout the growing season. Yields are controlled carefully, in part through the age of the vines and in part through deliberate canopy and vine management.
Winemaking
Fermentation at Leflaive takes place in barrel using native yeasts, with the wines spending an extended period in oak before bottling. The proportion of new oak is moderate by historical Burgundy standards; the domaine has generally favored older barrels to avoid wood dominating the fruit and mineral character of the wines. Aging on fine lees continues through the élevage, with minimal intervention intended to preserve freshness and site expression.
Filtration practice has varied over the years and the domaine has at times bottled without fining or filtration, though current practice should be verified vintage by vintage. The wines are bottled relatively late compared to some neighbors, allowing full integration before release.
Leflaive's grand crus, particularly Chevalier-Montrachet and Le Montrachet, are among the most sought-after white Burgundies produced anywhere, with secondary market prices reflecting that status. The premier crus, especially Les Pucelles and Les Combettes, have strong followings of their own and offer more realistic access to the domaine's house style: precise, mineral-driven Chardonnay built for the medium to long term.
