Domaine des Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is among the most celebrated addresses in Meursault, producing benchmark white Burgundies from a portfolio of premier and village-level sites, alongside a small holding of red Volnay.
History
The Lafon family has been rooted in Meursault for generations, with the domaine taking shape in the early twentieth century through the accumulation of parcels that now represent some of the appellation's most coveted addresses. For much of the postwar period, a significant portion of the estate's fruit was given over to sharecropping arrangements, meaning the domaine's full potential was realised only gradually as those leases expired and vineyards returned to direct family control. That process unfolded across the 1980s and into the 1990s, a period that coincided with Dominique Lafon assuming responsibility for the estate. His arrival marked a clear shift in ambition and quality, and the domaine's reputation was consolidated under his direction. Today Comtes Lafon is regularly cited alongside Coche-Dury and Roulot as a reference point for white Burgundy at the highest level.
In the 1990s, Dominique Lafon also established a separate project in the Mâconnais, Domaine des Héritiers du Comte Lafon, based in Milly-Lamartine. That venture is run independently and is not part of the Meursault estate, though it shares family lineage and a similar commitment to careful viticulture.
Vineyards
The domaine's holdings are concentrated in Meursault, with parcels in several of the village's most respected premiers crus: Les Perrières, Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, La Goutte d'Or, and Les Bouchères, among others. Les Perrières, sitting above the village on shallow, stony soils over oolitic limestone, is widely regarded as the finest of Meursault's premier cru sites and the closest the appellation comes to grand cru quality. The Volnay holding, centred on Santenots-du-Milieu, is unusual in that it is planted to Pinot Noir but lies within the Meursault commune boundary; under appellation rules, red wines from this parcel carry the Volnay name.
The domaine converted to organic and biodynamic farming over the course of the 1990s and 2000s. Dominique Lafon was an early advocate of this approach in the Côte de Beaune, and the vineyards are now farmed without synthetic inputs. Vine age across the estate is generally high, which contributes to the concentration and definition that characterises the wines.
Winemaking
Fermentation takes place in barrel using native yeasts, and the wines undergo extended elevage in oak, with a proportion of new wood that varies by cuvée and vintage but is generally restrained enough not to dominate the fruit. The premiers crus and village wines typically spend well over a year in barrel before bottling. Fining and filtration are kept to a minimum or avoided entirely. The style that results is not immediately showy: the wines tend toward precision and tension rather than early opulence, and they reward cellaring. Les Perrières is the flagship white, capable of ageing for two decades or more in good vintages. The Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu is among the more structured reds from that side of the Lafon portfolio, sharing the same careful approach in the cellar.
