Château Pierre-Bise
Château Pierre-Bise is one of the Coteaux du Layon's benchmark estates, producing age-worthy Chenin Blanc across multiple appellations including Quarts de Chaume and Savennières, alongside serious Anjou reds.
History
Château Pierre-Bise is a family estate based in Beaulieu-sur-Layon, in the heart of the Anjou. The domaine has been led by Claude Papin, one of the more quietly influential figures in the Loire's modern era, who built its reputation through a focus on single-site Chenin Blanc at a time when the appellation was widely underestimated. His son Nicolas has taken an increasingly active role in recent years, representing a generational continuity rather than a break in direction. The estate's standing rests on a body of work accumulated over decades: a consistent argument that the Layon's schist and volcanic soils, farmed carefully, can produce whites that reward serious cellaring.
Vineyards
Pierre-Bise holds parcels across several of Anjou's most significant appellations, including Coteaux du Layon Rochefort, the Grand Cru Quarts de Chaume, Savennières Roche aux Moines, and Savennières Clos Le Grand Beaupréau. The estate's vineyards sit on soils dominated by schist and spilitic volcanic rock, which are characteristic of the Layon valley and the hills above the Loire. These substrates drain well and retain heat, contributing to the concentration and acidity that define the style. Vineyard practices have moved toward organic farming, though the precise certification status across all parcels is not uniformly documented in public sources.
Winemaking
The white wines are made with minimal intervention as a general principle: native yeast fermentations, limited use of new oak, and extended aging before release. The sweet Chenin Blancs, including the Coteaux du Layon Rochefort and Quarts de Chaume, are made from botrytised and passerillage-affected fruit harvested in successive tries, and are built for long aging rather than immediate approachability. The dry whites at Savennières follow a similar philosophy: slow fermentations, time in barrel or tank, and bottling without heavy handling. The Anjou reds, including a Gamay and the Cabernet Franc-based Les Rouannières and Le Haut de la Garde, are a genuine part of the estate's range rather than an afterthought, and show the same preference for restraint and site expression over extraction.
