Château de Beaucastel

Beaucastel is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's benchmark estates, long associated with Mourvèdre-driven reds of unusual density and age-worthiness, and whites built substantially on Roussanne.

History

Château de Beaucastel has been in the Perrin family for several generations, with the modern identity of the estate shaped most visibly by Jacques Perrin and subsequently by his sons Jean-Pierre and François, who ran the domaine through its rise to international prominence in the latter decades of the twentieth century. The Perrins acquired the property in the early twentieth century, and the estate's reputation was built incrementally through a consistent commitment to using all thirteen grape varieties permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a practice few other producers maintained with such seriousness. Jacques Perrin's influence on the estate's direction was considered formative enough that the domaine's prestige cuvée was named in his memory after his death. The family has since expanded beyond Beaucastel itself, with négociant and partnership activities across the Rhône and into California, but the château remains the center of gravity. Today the third generation of Perrins is involved in management and winemaking, giving the estate unusual continuity of vision.

Vineyards

Beaucastel's vineyards sit in the northern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, on soils that are heavily covered with the large, rounded galets roulés the region is known for, though the estate also has parcels with more clay and sand in the mix. The vineyard holdings are substantial, covering well over a hundred hectares across the appellation. The estate has practiced organic and biodynamic farming for decades, well before either approach became fashionable in the southern Rhône. Mourvèdre is planted at a proportion far exceeding what most Châteauneuf producers use, which requires faith in the variety's capacity to ripen fully in this climate and gives the reds their particular structure and grip when young. Roussanne, including old-vine parcels used for the Vieilles Vignes bottling, is the backbone of the whites. The Coudoulet de Beaucastel wines come from vineyards just outside the appellation boundary, across the road from the château itself, qualifying only for Côtes du Rhône but drawing from contiguous soils.

Winemaking

Beaucastel ferments with native yeasts and has long avoided the kind of cellar interventions that would smooth the wines into easy approachability. The reds are macerated at elevated temperatures, a technique associated with the domaine that is intended to break down grape solids and reduce the risk of brett, though the estate's wines have not been entirely free of brettanomyces character over the years, which some drinkers find adds complexity and others find distracting. Aging takes place in large foudres rather than small barriques, preserving fruit and avoiding obvious oak imprint. The wines are not filtered. The Hommage à Jacques Perrin is the top red cuvée, produced only in years the family judges suitable, built on an unusually high proportion of Mourvèdre and requiring considerable cellaring. The Roussanne Vieilles Vignes white is among the most serious expressions of that variety in the southern Rhône, capable of aging far longer than white Châteauneuf is generally expected to.
