Chandon des Briailles

Chandon des Briailles is a Pernand-Vergelesses domaine with deep roots in the Côte de Beaune, producing reds and whites across Savigny-lès-Beaune, Corton, and Corton-Charlemagne from biodynamically farmed vines.

History

Chandon des Briailles has been among the quieter, more consistent voices in the Côte de Beaune for well over a century. The domaine takes its name from the de Nicolay family, whose ancestor Claude Chandon de Briailles established their presence in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses in the nineteenth century. The estate has remained in family hands across successive generations, which accounts for both the continuity of its vineyard holdings and the relative low profile it has maintained compared to more commercially aggressive neighbors. For much of the twentieth century the domaine was run in the traditional Burgundian pattern: grapes farmed, wines made in-house, sold in bottle and to négociants. The shift toward estate-bottling and a more deliberate house identity gathered pace in the latter decades of the twentieth century. Claude de Nicolay and his sister Nadine took over management and winemaking responsibilities and are largely credited with lifting the domaine's profile among international buyers and critics. Their approach has been methodical rather than dramatic, with incremental refinements in the vineyard and cellar rather than wholesale reinvention.

Vineyards

The domaine's holdings are centered on the hill of Corton and the appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses, with additional parcels in Savigny-lès-Beaune. This gives Chandon des Briailles an unusually complete picture of the Corton massif: red Corton from multiple climat, white Corton Blanc, and Corton-Charlemagne. The Île de Vergelesses, a premier cru that sits on the boundary between Pernand-Vergelesses and Savigny-lès-Beaune, is among the more distinctive sites in their portfolio, producing wines of notable structure and moderate weight. Soils across their holdings vary from the iron-rich, limestone-clay marl of the upper Corton slopes to the lighter, sandier ground lower in Savigny. The domaine converted to biodynamic farming and has held Biodyvin certification, which governs both vineyard treatments and harvest timing. Vine age across the estate is generally significant, contributing to the concentration and textural detail that marks their better cuvées.

Winemaking

In the cellar, Chandon des Briailles works with a light hand by Burgundian standards. Whole-cluster inclusion is used for the reds to a meaningful degree, which adds spice and structural grip without excessive tannin, particularly in the Corton cuvées. Fermentation relies on native yeasts. Oak use is restrained: the domaine favors a modest percentage of new barrels, keeping the fruit and site character forward rather than overlaying them with wood. Whites, including the Corton-Charlemagne and the premier cru blanc from Île de Vergelesses, are barrel-fermented and aged on lees. The wines are not heavily filtered, consistent with the broader biodynamic approach. The Corton Clos-du-Roi is generally considered a benchmark in their red lineup, a climat that rewards the whole-cluster approach and shows well with several years of age. Across both colors, the house style leans toward precision and length rather than immediate opulence.
