Benjamin Leroux

Aloxe-CortonFrance

Benjamin Leroux is a Beaune-based négociant and estate producer with holdings across Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, making precise, restrained whites and reds from some of Burgundy's most distinguished sites.

History

Benjamin Leroux spent his formative years as régisseur at Comte Armand in Pommard, one of the Côte de Beaune's most respected domaines, where he ran both vineyard and cellar operations for over a decade. That position gave him unusual depth of experience before he struck out on his own, founding his négociant house in Beaune in 2007. The business began modestly, sourcing fruit from growers he trusted, but it has grown steadily into one of the more closely watched small négoces in the region. Leroux has since added estate holdings of his own, though the négociant activity remains central to the range. His reputation rests on consistent quality across a wide spread of appellations rather than on any single flagship wine.

Vineyards

Leroux works with fruit from across the Côte d'Or and into the Côte Chalonnaise, spanning appellations from Chablis in the north to Chassagne-Montrachet in the south. The range reviewed here reflects that breadth: Grand Cru whites from Corton-Charlemagne and Bâtard-Montrachet, village and premier cru Meursault including the old-vine Cuvée 1950 bottling from La Pièce Sous Le Bois, Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru, and Grand Cru reds from Corton and Echézeaux. Because much of the fruit is sourced rather than estate-grown, farming practices vary by grower. Leroux has publicly emphasized working with suppliers who farm carefully, and a portion of the range comes from certified or practicing organic viticulture, though blanket claims across the full lineup would be inaccurate.

Winemaking

Leroux works in a reductive, precise style that prioritizes freshness and definition over richness. For whites, whole-cluster pressing is standard, with fermentation and aging in a mix of barrels, the proportion of new oak kept deliberately low to avoid overwhelming the fruit. The wines are not known for heavy extraction or obvious wood. Reds are made with attention to fruit clarity, using moderate extraction and similarly restrained oak. The Cuvée 1950 Meursault-Blagny La Pièce Sous Le Bois is among the most discussed wines in the range, named for the estimated planting date of the vines and handled to let that age express itself without intervention. Across both colors, the house style leans toward tension and longevity rather than early approachability.
