Bedrock Wine Co. specializes in old-vine field blends from California's historic ranches, with bottlings from sites in Sonoma, the Bay Area, and Napa's Oakville appellation.

History

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson, son of Ravenswood founder Joel Peterson, making him something close to California wine royalty by birthright. He launched the project in the mid-2000s with a focus that was, at the time, unfashionable: old California vineyards, often planted to mixed field blends of Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah, and whatever else the original growers put in the ground decades or a century ago. That focus has since become a defining thread in how a younger generation of California producers thinks about the state's viticultural inheritance. Twain-Peterson has been closely associated with the Historic Vineyard Society, an organization dedicated to documenting and preserving California's oldest plantings, and his work at Bedrock is as much archival as it is commercial. The Oakville label reflects a geographic expansion from Bedrock's Sonoma home base, bringing the same old-vine sensibility to Napa Valley material.

Vineyards

The wines reviewed here draw on a set of named ranches with significant viticultural age. Old Hill Ranch in Sonoma Valley is among the oldest continuously farmed vineyards in California, with plantings dating to the 1880s; it is a mixed-variety field blend site on volcanic and alluvial soils. Teldeschi, Dolinsek, Papera, and Evangelho are similarly old-vine Dry Creek and Contra Costa County sites, several of them planted on sandy soils that escaped the phylloxera epidemic and retain their original own-rooted vines. The Detert East Block Cabernet Franc is a Napa Valley site in Oakville. The Oakville Farmhouse Red draws on estate or sourced Napa fruit. Specific soil profiles, elevations, and farming certifications for each ranch are not uniformly documented in publicly available sources, though Bedrock's general approach emphasizes minimal intervention in the vineyard and working with growers who have farmed the same land for multiple generations.

Winemaking

Twain-Peterson works with native yeasts and favors minimal handling, a philosophy suited to the co-fermented, mixed-variety field blends that are the heart of the Heritage Wine lineup. The Heritage wines are whole-cluster or partially whole-cluster fermented depending on the vintage and site, aged in a combination of older French oak and neutral vessels to preserve varietal character rather than add wood flavor. Filtration is minimal or absent. The single-variety bottlings, including the Detert Cabernet Franc and the Syrah Pleine de Chene, follow a similar approach but allow individual grape character more room. The Oakville Farmhouse Red sits at a more approachable price point and stylistically reflects the broader Napa context of that fruit. Across the range, the emphasis is on freshness and legibility of site rather than extraction or structural weight.
