Arnoux-Lachaux

History

Arnoux-Lachaux traces its roots to the Arnoux family, longtime growers in Vosne-Romanée, whose holdings were consolidated and expanded through the marriage that brought the Lachaux name into the domaine. For much of its history the estate operated as a respected but not especially celebrated source of village and premier cru Vosne, selling a portion of its fruit or wine in bulk as was common among Côte de Nuits growers of its generation.

The decisive shift came when Charles Lachaux, grandson of Robert Arnoux, assumed winemaking responsibilities in the early 2010s. Still in his twenties at the time, Charles brought a markedly different orientation to the cellar, one that prioritized finesse and translucency over the richer, more extracted style that had defined the domaine under his father Pascal. The transition was gradual rather than abrupt, but by the mid-2010s the wines had changed enough in character to attract serious critical attention. Secondary market prices followed, sometimes dramatically so for the grands crus.

Robert Arnoux, who built much of the estate's vineyard portfolio, died in 1995. Pascal Arnoux continued the domaine through the intervening years before handing increasing responsibility to Charles. The domaine today operates under Charles's direction, with the Arnoux-Lachaux name retained as the legal and commercial identity.

Vineyards

The domaine holds parcels across a wide band of the Côte de Nuits, anchored in Vosne-Romanée but extending north into Nuits-Saint-Georges and south into the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. In Vosne, holdings include premier crus of considerable prestige: Les Grands Suchots, Aux Reignots (which sits immediately below Romanée-Saint-Vivant), and Les Chaumes. The crown of the portfolio is a parcel of Romanée-Saint-Vivant, one of the more sought-after grands crus in Burgundy given its direct adjacency to Romanée-Conti.

Outside Vosne, the domaine works with Clos de Vougeot (in the upper section known as Marei Haut, considered among the more reliably well-drained parts of that large and variable grand cru), Latricières-Chambertin, and Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Corvées Pagets, a premier cru monopole known for firm structure and minerality.

Charles Lachaux has moved the domaine toward organic and biodynamic practices, though the precise certification status is not fully documented in public sources. Vine age across the estate is generally high, particularly in the premier and grand cru parcels inherited from Robert Arnoux's era of planting and acquisition.

Winemaking

Charles Lachaux's approach in the cellar is defined by restraint: lower extraction, reduced new oak, and extended aging before release. Whole-cluster fermentation features prominently and has increased as Charles's confidence in the approach has grown, lending the wines a structural tension and aromatic lift that distinguishes them from the riper, more oak-inflected style of the Pascal Arnoux era.

Fermentation relies largely on native yeasts. New oak usage has been scaled back substantially, with a preference for older barrels that allow the fruit and site character to read more clearly. The wines spend an extended period in barrel before bottling, and releases have trended later than was once typical for the domaine. Neither fining nor filtration is emphasized as part of the house approach, though specifics vary by vintage.

The Romanée-Saint-Vivant is the wine that attracts the most attention and commands the highest prices, but the premier crus, particularly Grands Suchots and Aux Reignots, are widely regarded as among the more compelling expressions of those sites currently being produced. The village Vosne-Romanée, sourced from older vines, punches above its appellation rank and serves as a useful entry point into the domaine's current style.
