Antoniolo

GattinaraItaly

Antoniolo is one of Gattinara's benchmark estates, producing age-worthy Nebbiolo from the appellation's volcanic soils across three distinct single-vineyard Riservas that define what northern Piedmont can achieve.

History

Antoniolo has been among the defining names in Gattinara since the mid-twentieth century, at a time when the appellation was far less recognized than the Langhe to the south. The estate has remained in family hands across generations, with the Antoniolo family maintaining continuity of ownership and a consistent focus on the single-vineyard sites that now represent the appellation's finest expressions. Rosanna Antoniolo, who guided the estate for decades, was instrumental in establishing the reputations of the three crus, Osso San Grato, San Francesco, and Castelle, as serious reference points for Nebbiolo outside Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate's persistence through periods when Gattinara struggled commercially helped preserve vine age and site knowledge that younger operations could not replicate.

Vineyards

Gattinara sits in the northern reaches of Piedmont, in the Valsesia foothills where the soils shift dramatically from the limestone and clay of the Langhe. The dominant substrate here is porphyritic volcanic rock, weathered into acidic, mineral-rich, iron-tinged soils with limited fertility. These conditions produce Nebbiolo of notably high acidity and pronounced minerality, with tannin structures that differ in texture from Barolo. Antoniolo's holdings are concentrated on the hillsides surrounding the town, with the three named crus occupying different slope aspects and elevations within the DOCG zone. Osso San Grato is generally regarded as the estate's most structured site; San Francesco tends toward more aromatic finesse. Specific certified farming details are not widely documented in the public record.

Winemaking

The winemaking at Antoniolo follows a traditional arc: extended maceration on Nebbiolo, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks rather than barriques. This choice, common among serious Gattinara producers, preserves the wine's high-toned aromatics and lets the volcanic mineral character read clearly without the overlay of new wood. The Riserva wines spend considerable time in cask and bottle before release, arriving with some development already in place. The three single-vineyard Riservas (Osso San Grato, San Francesco, and Castelle) are bottled separately to preserve site distinctions. The estate also produces earlier-drinking Nebbiolo under the Juvenia label, which draws on younger vines or declassified fruit, and a Nebbiolo rosato from the Bricco Lorella site that shows the grape's aromatic range in a lighter format. Filtration practices and yeast protocols are not extensively documented in available sources.
