Carmenère represents one of viticulture's most fascinating stories of rediscovery and reinvention. This ancient Bordeaux variety, once integral to the region's finest blends, disappeared from its homeland following the phylloxera crisis, only to resurface dramatically in Chile during the 1990s. The variety's resurrection has revealed its potential to produce wines of exceptional depth and complexity when cultivated under appropriate conditions. The grape's defining characteristic is its extended ripening period, requiring four to five weeks longer than Merlot to reach physiological maturity. This extended hang time, while challenging for viticulturists, allows for the development of complex flavor compounds and substantial tannin structure. When fully ripe, Carmenère produces wines of remarkable intensity, combining the approachable fruit character associated with Merlot with the structural backbone reminiscent of Cabernet Sauvignon. Origins & History
Carmenère is an old variety from the Gironde in southwest France, first mentioned in 1783-4 in Bergerac under the name Carmeynere. Its modern spelling appeared in 1816, when Andre Jullien noted it as one of the varieties that 'alone constitute the Medoc vineyards that give top-quality red wines.' The variety was widely cultivated in the Medoc in the early 18th century but was largely abandoned after phylloxera devastated Bordeaux in the 1870s. Its susceptibility to coulure (poor fruit set) made yields unreliable, and growers replanted with more dependable varieties. By 2008, only 21 hectares remained in France. Carmenère found a second life in Chile, where it had been imported in the mid-19th century and planted in field blends, primarily with Merlot. For over a century, it was grown unknowingly, as growers believed they had Merlot. French ampelographer Claude Valat first noticed discrepancies in Chilean Merlot, and in 1994 Jean-Michel Boursiquot identified the mystery vines as Carmenère, confirmed by DNA analysis in 1997. Chile officially recognized Carmenère in 1998, and it has since become the country's signature grape.

Genetic Lineage
Carmenère is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Gros Cabernet, an old and now extinct variety from the Gironde. This parentage gives Carmenère a high degree of consanguinity with Cabernet Franc, as it is both a direct offspring and a great-grandchild of Cabernet Franc. It is also a half-sibling of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

DNA analysis confirmed Cabernet Franc as a parent. The high consanguinity explains the historical confusion between the two varieties.

Massale selections from old Chilean vineyards, some dating to pre-phylloxera imports. Viña Santa Carolina has rescued heritage selections from old producer vineyards. Research shows nearly four-fold variation in pyrazine levels (40-150 nanograms per liter) between different selections, affecting green pepper character.

Disease Profile
Carmenère is vigorous with low basal-bud fertility, requiring cane pruning rather than spur pruning. It ripens very late, 4-5 weeks after Merlot in Chile, making site selection critical. When harvested under-ripe, wines show strong capsicum and herbaceous flavors from methoxypyrazines. At full maturity, these transform to blackberry, blueberry, chocolate, and coffee, though acidity tends to drop.
Susceptibilities
Carmenère has poor fruit set, one of the main reasons it was abandoned in Bordeaux after phylloxera. Cool, wet weather at flowering can dramatically reduce yields.
The variety shows susceptibility to root pests, requiring appropriate rootstock selection.

Terroir Preferences
The traditional planting sites in Chile's Central Valley, particularly Maipo and Rapel. Deep alluvial soils provide consistent water access, important for this late-ripening variety. Warmer sites help achieve full phenolic ripeness.
Higher elevation sites with volcanic influence, such as Alto Maipo, provide cooler conditions and better drainage. Can help retain acidity while achieving ripeness, producing more structured wines.

In China's Ningxia and Gansu regions, sandy soils in arid conditions suit Carmenère (known as Cabernet Gernischt). The variety shows good adaptation to these conditions.
Regional Expressions
Chile is the undisputed center of Carmenère production, with over 7,000 hectares. The variety was grown unknowingly as Merlot for over a century until its identification in 1994. Chile's warm, dry climate allows full phenolic ripeness, avoiding the herbaceous notes that plagued Bordeaux. The best examples show chocolate, coffee, and ripe dark fruit character. Producers are identifying optimal sites and working on clonal selection to further elevate quality.

Known as Cabernet Gernischt, Carmenère has been grown in China since the late 19th century, imported by Changyu Winery. DNA profiling confirmed its identity as Carmenère. About 1,200 hectares are planted in Shandong and northwestern regions. The arid climate and sandy soils suit the variety. Wines tend toward herbaceous character similar to Cabernet Franc.

About 45 hectares officially recorded in 2000, mostly in the northeast where it was confused with Cabernet Franc (the 'Italian' biotype vs the 'French' true Cabernet Franc). When the confusion was clarified, some producers began making varietal wines. Ca'del Bosco's Carmenero is classified as vino da tavola since Carmenère is not authorized for DOC wines.

The original home of Carmenère, now reduced to about 21 hectares. Small plantings remain at classified estates including Chateau Clerc Milon in Pauillac and at Clos Louie in Cotes de Castillon, which has pre-phylloxera ungrafted vines. Chateau Brane-Cantenac replanted 0.5 hectares in 2007. Used primarily in blends.
